Представим, что вы садитесь за стол, стол накрыт, и вы собираетесь обедать. Как вы думаете, какие слова дают самое элементарное представление о пище?
В широком смысле оба слова синонимы и означают – «съедобный», «годный в пищу». Но есть и различие.
EATABLE – прилагательное, которое указывает на то, что перед нами приятная, аппетитная, вкусная пища.

Конечно, пища может быть съедобной и даже полезной, но если ее вид или вкус вызывают у вас крайне негативную реакцию, то вы можете сказать:
EDIBLE – тоже является прилагательным. Его используют, когда хотят сказать, что пища пригодна к употреблению, ее не опасно есть.
Если EATABLE делает акцент на вкусе и аппетитном виде пищи,
то EDIBLE подчеркивает безопасность продукта для употребления.
EATABLE и EDIBLE могут использоваться как существительные и, как правило, во множественном числе:

Eatable and edible are two words in English language that lead to confusion among most people, let alone non-natives. This is because of the ostensible similarities in their meanings. Despite overlap, there are subtle differences between the meanings of eatable and edible suggesting the use of the two words in different contexts.
Eatable
Eatable is a word made up of ‘eat’ and ‘able’ which implies that anything that is able to be eaten classifies as being eatable. Synonyms for the word are edible and comestible. However, the word is used sparingly in this sense and edible is the term used more frequently. Eatable is used more in the sense of food that is not of very high quality but one that can still be eaten. In fact, eatable is a rather informal term and today used more to describe food items in a party as eatables.
Edible
Edible comes from Latin edibilis, which means to eat. It is a word that describes a food item that can be consumed without harm. This is a sense that is sought to be conveyed when we talk of edible flowers and edible oils, as well as edible fruits. Edible is used in text more often to refer to items that can be eaten without any worries as they are not poisonous. If we say that fish is edible, it means that the fish is not poisonous and is fit enough for consumption.
What is the difference between Eatable and Edible?
• There is not much of a difference between eatable and edible though eatable is informal and used very sparingly whereas edible is used much more commonly.
• Edible means something that is not toxic or poisonous and fit enough for consumption whereas eatable means something that is palatable.
• So something that is ready to be eaten is an eatable.
• Raw meat is edible but yet not eatable until it has been cooked
• Something that is edible is not always eatable, but if it is eatable, it is automatically edible.

In this post, I want to go over the differences between eatable and edible—what little there is. I will use example sentences to demonstrate their functions and definitions.

When to Use Eatable
Eatable functions as an adjective. Something that is eatable is at least marginally enjoyable or palatable.
In this sense, eatable puts more of a focus on the palatability and taste of a food. Something may be perfectly fit for human consumption, but if its taste or texture make your throw up while eating it, you might say it is not eatable.
When to Use Edible
Edible also functions as an adjective. Something that is edible is fit for human consumption without danger.
Just as eatable puts more of a focus on the palatability or taste of a food, edible put its emphasis on whether or not the food is safe for consumption, i.e., nonpoisonous and capable of being eaten without danger.
In this sense, a food could be said to be edible but not eatable, if there is nothing dangerous about consuming the food, but it taste disgusting.
Eatables and Edibles as Nouns
Both eatable and edible can function as nouns. When acting as a noun, they usually appear in the plural.
How Can I Remember the Difference?
Not sure how you are going to remember this distinction? Here is good trick.
Eatable is something that you can enjoy eating and can do it regularly. This is easy to remember because eatable has the word eat in it. So you eat things that are eatable.
Edible is something that is free from danger, safe to consume. Remember this because edible and danger both have the letter “D” in them.
Summary
While these two words both have to do with food and the ability to eat it, they focus on slightly different things. Whether you choose edible or eatable for your sentence depends on what you want to emphasize.
Eatable foods have at least some marginal enjoying qualities to them. They are palatable.
