Mechanics
The EMF reader is a small black box adorned with five colored LED lights, each one indicating a different EMF level.
Whenever a ghost interacts with the environment and depending on the type of interaction, the EMF reader will light up various numbers of its LEDs. If the ghost causes multiple interactions within a short time frame, the one with the highest EMF level will be indicated by the EMF reader. During hunts, the EMF reader will malfunction and display random values between level 1 and 4.
The EMF Reader can be dropped on the floor, which increases its detection range, but due to being a directional tool, it will only be able to detect activities in the direction that it is facing.

EMF Level 5
If the ghost has EMF Level 5 as a possible piece of evidence, each EMF occurrence of Levels 2 or 3 has a 25% chance to trigger a Level 5 indication instead. EMF Level 5 does not necessarily indicate strong activity or immediate danger to the player.
EMF Level 5 can prove to be quite location-sensitive, often requiring the player to aim the reader at a specific location within the ghost room during elevated activity, often the place the ghost has been standing in, which may be deduced with the help of ultraviolet footprints made by the Ghost walking through salt.

Equipment
The Equipment store, which can be used to buy Purchasable Equipment
Equipment in Phasmophobia is used to determine the type of ghosts inhabiting a location, or to achieve optional objectives. Players can purchase equipment using money they receive from successful investigations, but players are only able to bring a limited amount of each item when they go on an investigation.
When a player dies, they lose all equipment they added to the mission, excluding 1 of each starter equipment. Players who stay alive do not have to collect their equipment at the end of a contract to keep their equipment, it will be returned to them automatically.
There are 4 types of equipment:
Ghosts disrupt electronic equipment whenever they are visible, such as during a hunt or when they manifest (i.e. become visible while not hunting).
Ghosts can blow out lighters and candles. Lighters and candles will be extinguished when thrown or outside in heavy rain.

Starter Equipment
Starter Equipment is available from the very beginning, and one of each of the following will always be included on an investigation, though additional copies may be purchased.

Removed equipment
Infrared Light Sensor
The infrared light sensor detected movement from both Ghosts and Players and would illuminate the area with a bright light, much like the current Motion Sensor. It however would not provide feedback to the Van, nor count in the «Detect the Ghost with a Motion Sensor» objective. This item was removed in v.0.3.0.
