A Brief History Lesson

As the world’s first commercially successful solid-body electric guitar, the Telecaster was groundbreaking when Leo Fender introduced it in 1951.

At the time, rock and roll was still a few years away, and Leo and his staff were building guitars and amplifiers for western swing guitarists looking to get more volume and projection.

Twang-loving country legends like Luther Perkins and Buck Owens helped bring the Telecaster sound to the masses, influencing rock players like Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and George Harrison who would, in turn, change the face of music in the 1960s and beyond.

As for the Stratocaster, Leo was initially looking to refine the classic Tele design, but during the development process, an entirely new model rose from the sawdust. Owing many design elements to the Telecaster, in addition to the Precision Bass that also came out in 1951, the Strat was a step up, boasting three pickups with switching and controls that created greater tonal versatility, a contoured body, and an innovative bridge.

Introduced in 1954, the guitar piqued curiosity when Buddy Holly played one on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957, but truly gained global acclaim in the hands of 1960s virtuosos like Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Robin Trower and Eric Clapton.

Amazingly, traditional versions of the Stratocaster and Telecaster have gone largely unchanged for more than 60 years, and their popularity shows no signs of waning.

While Fender has made several iterations of both guitars over the years, here is a breakdown of what separates is thought of a traditional Tele and Strat.

Stratocaster Necks vs. Telecaster Necks

Both the modern Telecaster and Stratocaster bolt-on necks largely feature 22 frets and a 25.5” scale, with identical nut width and 9.5” fretboard radius.

But the Stratocaster has a noticeably larger headstock, whether the original iteration or the bulky one that was used from 1965-81. Some guitarists claim that the larger Strat headstock gives the guitar more sustain and tone, but that debate has raged for years.

Stratocaster Bodies vs. Telecaster Bodies

Telecaster and Stratocaster bodies are mostly constructed from alder — a lightweight, closed-pore wood with a resonant, balanced tone that imparts excellent sustain and sharp attack. Ash, mahogany and other tonewoods have also been used.

As for the body silhouettes, both are instantly recognizable. The Tele has a single cutaway and no body contours. In addition to its sleek contours that make it eternally comfortable to play, the Strat has another cutout on the upper horn for better access to the upper notes.

Stratocaster Electronics vs. Telecaster Electronics

The Stratocaster and Telecaster generally have similar electronics. They each have a master volume control, but where the Tele only has one tone control, the Strat has dedicated tone knobs for the middle and bridge pickups.

The switching, however, is another story. The Telecaster has always carried a three-way switch, but after guitarists found that they could get more tonal versatility by jamming the Strat’s original three-way switch in between the first and second position and second and third position, Fender outfitted it with a standard five-way selector.

The Telecaster typically has two single-coil pickups, with the bridge pickup being wider and longer than its Strat counterpart. What’s more, it is mounted on the Tele’s metal bridge plate, which can give it a more powerful tone.

Stratocaster Hardware vs. Telecaster Hardware

The bridge is probably the most glaring distinction here. Both have six adjustable saddles (vintage Teles had three saddles), but the Telecaster’s houses the bridge pickup, while the Strat bridge is a two-point tremolo system.

The Strat bridge is attached to springs that allow the player to raise or lower the pitch of the strings through the use of a “whammy bar.»

‘Which Is Right for Me?’

Whether a Tele or a Strat is right for you is a matter of personal opinion. Both guitars have a rich history and countless devotees, but the feel and sound can differ greatly.

That’s not to mention the variations on each that have come out over the years, such as the new American Performer Series or Player Series, with assorted specs like pickup configurations, neck profiles and tonewoods.

Throughout the ages, guitarists have gravitated towards either the Strat or the Tele. And oftentimes, players sit somewhere in between.

The best thing to do is refuse to let the stereotypes themselves lead you down a certain path. You can only be truly informed after playing them yourself.

Stratocaster vs. Telecaster: The Differences That Matter

If you looked at electric guitars through the lens of genealogy, the Stratocaster and Telecaster would seem like brothers born three years apart. Together, they carry the coat-of-arms of the family Fender: single-coil pop, bright articulation, and endless versatility.

At the same time, Strats and Teles are different in some significant ways. These differences have led to divergent histories, player endorsements, lore and fan bases. Whether you’re looking to buy or wondering which guitar would be best to record that particular sound you’ve been hearing in your head for weeks, here’s a primer.

The Stratocaster and Telecaster at a Glance

Before you start arguing that some Teles have Bigsbys or extra pickups or that some Strats have hardtail bridges, keep in mind that the table above shows the high-level comparison between the current Fender American Standard offerings for both models. The same finishes are usually available for both, and the body wood has been interchangeable (there have been plenty of ash-bodied Strats and alder Teles through the years). For the sake of consistency, I’ll reference what players consider the classic specs for each.

There are some superficial differences: body shape and a neck pocket geometry (square on Teles, rounded on Strats). But what are the real characteristics that polarize people around these two models?

Fender Stratocaster: Glass, Bells, and Quacks

When the Strat debuted in 1954, players weren’t sure what to make of it. The Fender Telecaster and Gibson Les Paul had just come out a few years prior. People were still trying to figure out exactly where solidbody electric guitars fit into the picture. And here comes the Strat, eagerly showing players the virtues of extra pickups and a crazy lever for detuning before they knew they wanted it.

Calling cards of the Stratocaster:

A neck pickup tone like no other. Glassy, round, bell-like. Use your adjective of choice.

The 2 and 4 positions on the 5-way selector, sometimes called the quack tones. When the selector had only 3 positions in earlier years, players would stick the switch in these sweet spots. Listen to Mark Knopfler milk these in the video example below.

A vibrato bar (trem arm) with more give than a Bigsby. Players can keep it in their hand to articulate in real-time (watch latter-day Jeff Beck at work).

Fender stratocaster vs telecaster в чем отличие

Подскажите пожалуйста с выбором гитары, предпочитаю лёгкую музыку что-то на подобии indie-rock.
Если обратить внимание на перегруз, то я не использую что-то сверх металлическое) у меня proco rat 2 и фуз винтажный tubescreamer 808

Не знаю что выбрать Telecaster или Stratocaster

Телекастер стандарт американский довольно дорогой, получается выбор будет или мексиканский или японский (старенький, где-то 80-х)
я слышал, что многие не очень любят мексиканское производство, я слушал несколько, именно мексиканских, телекастеров, звук звонкий, но не объёмный, хотя каждая гитара по своему звучит.

Если брать стратокастер, то можно даже американский купить, хотя и мексиканских много, играл на мексиканском, очень приятная гитара, небольшой вес, небольшие формы по сравнению с телекастером.

Это не кастом шоп, но неплохая, вылизанная модель. Видел в Одессе такую. Мегаприятный инструмент.

Для инди, панка и прочей не слишком митольной музыки я б заценил телек, грамотно подгруженгный звук от него звучит нереально кайфово. он получается поплотнее и посырее, чем у страта.

А вообще Noxer правильно написал на счёт универсальности, Страт более разноплановая гитара, но звук Телека очень круто раскрывается в не тяжёлой музыке, он совершенно другой. Сам обладатель американского стандарта (Телек). Звук на овердрайвах просто обалденный, думаю с 808-м сочетался бы за здрасти.

Я бы не хотел брать копии, можно было бы взять недорогой мексиканский стратокастер и поменять звукосниматели на винтажные, но это же всё слушать надо.

DirtyParadise кто то у нас недавно продавал G&L как раз в винтажном исполнении, год не скажу. но инструмент прикольный. поищи в продажах на форуме.. и цена прикольная была.

А почему именно телек или именно страт? имхо для такого стиля музыки очень много разных гитар подойдут. И нужно слушать самому, а не полагаться на чье-то мнение. Как по мне так у телекастера форма уродская, а фендер в разы красивее. И вообще непонятна суть проблемы. Берешь любой American Standart Strat и наяриваешь себе свой indie рок.

Кстати, гитару то по запчастям можно нагрести, так даже прикольнее будет.

Boyscout ну он то как раз не знал.. По этому и 3 года эксперементы проводил, прежде чем пришел к конечному варианту )

Я собственно про то, что по запчастям можно набрать вполне классные куски. Добавить туда еще винтажное железо и датчики и будет гитара, всем гитарам гитара.

Если долго ковыряться можно классный комплект собрать по приемлимым деньгам
