Difference between Fluid and Liquid

Fluid and liquid sound like the same thing, right? As in “drink more fluids when you are sick” and “water is a liquid.” Then, what is the difference between the two and in what context does it matter most?

Summary Table

A condition specific to certain substances

Its essential characteristic is that it flows and has viscosity

Its essential characteristic is that it flows and has volume, but no shape

Fluids include liquids

All liquids are fluid

Definitions

Fluid is a term defining the condition of a substance that deforms and flows constantly. It is a phase of matter that includes liquids, gases, plasma, and certain categories of solids made of plastic. A fluid lacks rigidity and it cannot resist sheer force when it is applied to it. Also, it flows and changes shape immediately after.

A liquid is one of the four states of matter, along with gas, solids, and plasma. This state is defined by a volume with no fixed shape. It takes the shape of the container it is placed in. Also, liquids are fluids, in the sense that they flow and do not resist force when applied to them.

Fluid vs Liquid

When you understand the difference between a fluid and a liquid, you understand why all liquids are fluids, but not all fluids are liquid.

Fluid is a condition of specific substances, whereas liquid is one of the phases of matter. The essential characteristic of fluids is that they flow. Also, when defining a fluid substance, you must also mention its viscosity. Liquids, on the other hand, flow and are defined as having volume without a fixed shape.

Fluid and liquid could be the same as nouns. (Check all the fluids/liquids.) Sometime they are the same as adjectives. (This is a fluid/liquid measurement.) However, they each have separate meanings used as adjectives. Fluid can mean «graceful, smooth.» (Her movements were so fluid that I was dazzled.) Liquid can be used this way too, but it’s less common and would only be used for humans, generally women. Liquid is sometimes used to describe the beautiful eyes of a woman. (Her liquid eyes moved me.)

@hanixf
That answer is a good one.
But do you study science?

Liquid is a state of matter (solid, liquid, gas, or plasma)

Fluid is a phase of matter. It is defined by viscosity. Fluids will flow and have no fixed shape.
Liquids are fluids because they flow.
Gases are fluids because they also flow and have a measurable viscosity.
All liquids are fluids.
But not all fluids are liquids.
“Fluid dynamics” describes the flow of both liquids and gases.

Outside of science, though, it surprises many English speakers that gases are fluids. Colloquially we often use fluid and liquid interchangeably.

Sometimes you have to use one or the other.
Car engines need fluids.

А именно Power Steering Fluid => Dia Queen PSF.

DEXRON II, III.

После замены жидкости на новенький мобил, я заметил, что руль начал вращаться легче. Насос гидроусилителя и раньше не шумел.

«Fluids» versus «liquids»?

What is the difference between fluid and liquid?

I’m thinking of this in the context of drink plenty of fluids.

A fluid can either be a liquid or a gas; as such, fluid is a hypernym of liquid in this regard. In your example

it’s only idiomatic to use fluids instead of liquids. (I wonder what else could be drunk besides a liquid/fluid, anyway!) You also hear things like:

Your body needs lots of fluids

In day-to-day usage, one will find liquid only used when the state of matter of a substance is in question or important to note. For example:

«How’s the brownie mix looking?» «It’s still basically liquid!»

When ice-cream is involved, melted is more likely to be used instead of liquid. One may also find liquid used in a financial context:

They think I’m liquid but, man, I’m flat broke!

Fluid just sounds smoother and it rolls off the tongue much easier. That probably explains why it’s more commonly used in place of liquid. People would probably use gas if they wanted to be specific. Here are some common idiomatic phrases:

From the above examples, you may notice that fluid tends to be used for a liquid substance that has a specified/particular purpose. Thus, transmission liquid would be unidiomatic, for instance.

A liquid is a state of matter in which the molecules move freely but tend not to separate; e.g. water at room temperature. A fluid is simply something that flows, be it gas, or liquid.

Fluid describes a substance that has no fixed shape and changes shape freely based on outside influences. It can describe two states of matter: gas and liquid. To think of it another way, a liquid is a fluid, but a fluid is not necessarily a liquid.

In general usage, «liquid» and «fluid» are synonyms.

In a scientific context they are not.

«Liquid» is a state of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, Bose-Einstein condensate

«Fluid» describes certain properties generally attributed to substances in a liquid state

Fluids display such properties as:
* not resisting deformation, or resisting it only lightly (viscosity), and
* the ability to flow (also described as the ability to take on the shape of the container).

The degree of fluidity depends on the substance and the prevailing conditions (e.g. temperature and pressure).

Consider water, motor oil and maple syrup. At room temperature, they are all liquids. As the temperature drops, all three liquids get denser and flow more slowly.

At 32° F / 0° C water becomes a solid (ice) and no longer flows. Motor oil and maple syrup continue to flow, but the syrup flows more slowly.

In general usage it has become «less fluid».

Difference Between Liquid and Fluid

June 30, 2011 Posted by Olivia

Liquid vs Fluid

When you are sick and your doctor suggests you to take more fluids, what do you infer? Similarly when you buy brake oil to be used in your car and the container has brake fluid written over it, what do you make out of the term? This and other common usage of the term fluid are very confusing which is why people find it hard to differentiate between a fluid and a liquid. This article attempts to remove this confusion by high lighting the features of both of them and pointing out their differences.

A fluid is anything that flows. So naturally it includes both liquids and gases. A liquid is defined as a substance that occupies the shape of the container in which it is placed though keeping its volume. A gas on the other hand takes both the shape as well as the volume of the container. Thus it is clear that all liquids are fluids but not all fluids are liquids as fluids also contain substances in gaseous state.

All matter is either solid, liquid, or gas. But fluid is a subset of matter that includes liquids, gases, plasma, and even some plastic solids. However, the common usage of the term fluid creates an impression that it is a synonym for liquid and does not include gases. When plaster is being made by adding water to cement, it is in a fluid state but becomes a solid once it has been applied over a brick wall.

Liquid is one of the three phases of matter. It flows and takes the shape of the container in which it is placed. Surface tension is one of the most important characteristics of liquids which is responsible for the feeling of wetness when one touches a liquid with bare hands.

So, the difference between liquids and fluids boils down to their viscosity as fluids have a higher viscosity such as oils than liquids. Fluids can be gases also whereas liquids arte altogether different than gases.

What about dry sand, flour, baking soda, ground coffee beans, salt… these are all solids, yet they flow and fill a container because they are made of tiny grains or crystals. Could one say that they are fluid but not liquid?
