P.s. интересно а сколько всего визарды выпустили бустеров?
P.p.s насчет 2-х фойлов в бустере. очень повезло. если эти фойлы комоны, то такое бывает только в одном бустере из 666. 🙂 клевое число, однако.

Ты же говоришь, что вероятность появления фойлового рара в бустере меньше, чем фойлового анкоммона или коммона. Ну так это естественно, так как вообще вероятность появления рара меньше, чем анкоммона или коммона (1:3:11).

They do remain flat. Mine have anyway.
They look horrendous however. The video example of Prossh that they first teased looked like the art would remain largely «normal» compared to regular foils, while the border got most of the treatment. But in person, oof. They’re grainy, completely washed out, and terrible visibility in most lighting.
Artifact masterpiece foiling remains the best out of the modern foil options imo.
The foil effect is kinda terrible, compared to regular foils.
Its very «dark» and especially white cards look just awful with the effect.
The problem of foils turning darker in the art due to the foiling is an issue anyway.
On gold multicolor cards the effect looks better, but it still looks weird.
The «dots» in the art from the etched foiling also make the art look more «Pixelated» and dirty (like a slim fog of dust).
Prefer regular foils, especially the old ones, where the foil makes the card a lot brighter and shiny (good old foil «star»).
I ordered a Thrasios since this new version is cheaper at the moment. I hope I don’t regret it. I’ll post an update once I’ve had a chance to see it. I really wanted a non-foil printing of him sadly, which doesn’t appear to be promising any time soon.
Images thus far seem mixed. I’m not sure if it’s flash or just intense lighting or printing variability but some look nice while others look like coal with gravel inclusions. I prefer experimenting in the territory of secret rares from Yugioh or the cosmic foil from original Pokémon than what these seem to be.

I got a Derevi, Empyrial Tactician from a booster and I like most of it. The frame is shiny and glittery. The name-box and the Type-box looks like it is standing out (3d-like). Really nice. I think the picture is slightly worse. I don’t know, how to describe it. Darker and more pixelly. The set Icon in the text-box is the ugliest thing in my opinion. I would like to see a white card with this printing method. I have a red one Krark, the Thumbless and that card looks really great. The picture looks alright and the set symbol doesn’t seem to be that ugly.
Edit: They look way better in person (real life) than on pictures.

here’s why: they’re too dark. there’s no nuance to the foiling as its applied to everything. no emphasis on anything just lolfoil. they’re grainy as ****. did i mention they’re grainy as ****? they’re grainy as ****.
they photograph really well, but to look at them with the naked eye they look like *****.
edit: oh! i almost forgot, they’re more difficult to read because the text box is dark with white writing instead of light with dark writing. it draws the eye to the background, which is busy with the set symbol, instead of drawing the eye to the actual text.

ugh. i totally forgot they did that.
i also find it shameful that this was one of the key selling points for the set, and that they just look so bad. just so terribly bad. it sucks ass to pay extra for a premium pack where you’re getting 2 etched foils as a sure thing, and then to see how bad they actually look. its almost like why even bother.

Foil cards, officially styled as premium cards, [1] are Magic cards which have a foil or «glossy» finish to them.

Properties [ ]
The process involves a special metal foil layer on the card that highlights certain parts of the artwork over others (the lighter areas are more reflective). All foil cards are black-bordered, even those from the last white-bordered core sets, the exception being that of the Un-sets, which are silver-bordered. Foils do not pass the bend test; because foil cards have metal on the front, they crease when bent.
Rarity [ ]
Foil cards are randomly inserted in Draft booster packs. From Core Set 2020 forwards, 1:45 cards in Draft Boosters is foil, instead of the previous 1:67. [2] [3] Collector Boosters, introduced in 2019, and Set Boosters (introduced in 2020) contain foils in higher rates. Mythics, rares and uncommons are harder to locate than commons, just like their unfoiled counterparts.
Slots [ ]
Prior to Time Spiral, if a (Draft) booster pack contained a foil card it would replace the card normally found in that rarity. (i.e. the card Shared Triumph is rare if there was a foil version in a pack it would replace the card found in the rare slot). Starting with Time Spiral, in every set a foil card replaces a common card regardless of the rarity of the foil card. [4] This means there is a chance of getting two rares (or three in the Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Shadows over Innistrad or Eldritch Moon packs due to the double-faced card slot) or even mythic rares in a single booster pack: one foil, and one regular (as well as one double-sided in the aforementioned sets).
Producing foils [ ]
The foil process has not always been the same through the years. There have also been different foiling processes used for release cards (which creates a diagonal-slant effect), From the Vault: Dragons (double-foiled), supplemental sets (usually lower quality), etc. [5]
Pre-Modern foil [ ]
Urza’s Legacy was the first set to feature foil cards in booster packs. [6] [7] [8] However, Lightning Dragon was the first widely-available foil premium card, as it was the card given away at the Urza’s Saga prerelease. [9]
Pre-Modern foils have a shooting star in the lower-left-hand corner of the card. The process to create these cards involved a problem where certain foils would include a «cutline» or «printline»: a seam in the foil treatment across the face of the card.
Traditional foil [ ]
The traditional foiling process (which eliminated print lines) started with Eighth Edition. [10] Traditional foils have a «rainbow effect» covering the whole card.
These «rainbow foils» have an extra layer on the card that highlights certain parts of the artwork over others, the «white under-print plate», or «WUP.» [11] The holographic foil laminate (a metallic «sticker») has to be bonded to this WUP and the regular card back. After being allowed to «cure» for several weeks, the foil laminate is then overprinted with regular paint for the matching card art. Foil laminates are tricky on playing cards due to the standards needed for wear resistance and ease of shuffling.
You can peel the foil laminate off a traditional foil card, which leaves the paper card with a blank white front.

From the Vault [ ]
From the Vault sets were printed using a special foiling process that was unique to the series. They were printed on a foil stock that is twice as reflective, and treated with a varnish. [14] This resulted in a shinier and stiffer card that had an almost ‘holographic’ look to them. They feel much slicker to the touch and weigh a notable amount more than a regular foil. From the Vault cards are also exceedingly hard to write on (e.g. an autograph). However, these cards were also notable for having many production issues, like one-pixel vertical lines going down the card-face. They were also more prone to curl, regardless of moisture (but moisture makes it worse).
Foil-etched [ ]
Commander Legends introduced the «foil-etched» treatment. These cards use a brand-new foiling process that looks different from previous foils. [15] [16] From that moment on, the regular foil was called «Traditional» foil.
Foil-etched is sparkling shiny when touched by light. It doesn’t make use of a foil laminate, but instead uses metallic paint. It doesn’t cover the whole card, but only highlights specific parts.
The foil-etching process presents an interesting twist when dealing with older cards in Modern Horizons 2. [17] In the early days of Magic, Wizards of the Coast didn’t have custom WUP treatments for artwork, so on foil-etched retro frame cards, the foil effects don’t show inside the art box itself.
Gold foil-etched [ ]
Secret Lair Drop Series: MSCHF featured cards that were «Gold Foil Etched».
Silverscreen foil [ ]
For Innistrad Double Feature the usual «rainbow» foil treatment was swapped for an unique «silverscreen» foil that enhanced a cinematic monochrome effect. [18] This style of traditional foil shows off the art with a special silver substrate treatment and a glossy varnish finish that. It was also featured «Eternal Night» in the 2021 Innistrad sets.
This is also possibly the same foiling that was used in Secret Lair Drop Series: MSCHF and was described as «Traditional Foil with Silver Laminate».
Galaxy foil [ ]
Unfinity introduced «galaxy foil», which looks like stars in space. [19]
Quality issues [ ]
Foils are notoriously harder to keep in Near Mint condition than non-foil cards. [5] They tend to collect dirt easier, creating a «cloudy» look on the front of the card. They can also have more noticeable print lines (especially on foils made pre-Eighth Edition when they changed the foiling process), tend to curl/bend/warp a lot easier (especially in warmer climates), and don’t shuffle as well.
Warping [ ]
Traditional foil Magic cards are made of two things, cardboard and metal foil. [20] Like all paper materials, magic cards have a tiny amount of moisture within the cellulose pulp. This water is partially what gives paper flexibility without snapping it. If you remove the water, the paper becomes more brittle. If you add more water, it becomes more flexible. One way this occurs naturally is through humidity, which can cause the water content inside a card to fluctuate. It’s this fluctuation that causes cards to grow or shrink, on a virtually imperceptible scale.
With non-foil cards, this doesn’t cause a problem because the entire card expands evenly. But on foils, this can cause the cards to curl because while one side of the card is made of cardboard that changes size when water is added or removed, the other side is covered in a metal foil layer that does not expand through moisture. If you store your cards in a very humid environment, the cards will curl with the backside of the card bulging out because the backside of the card has room to expand while the front half is fixed in place by the foil layer. But if the humidity is lowered, this causes the water to go down, causing the cardboard to shrink, and the front side to bulge out.
But humidity is not the only factor that causes cards to curl. Much like how humidity causes the cardboard to grow and shrink, the same happens to the foiling when exposed to heat, because heat causes the metal to expand, and lower temperatures cause it to contract. These two factors control how much a card warps. If the temperature and humidity are at the temperature the cards were printed at, they won’t curl. If you keep your cards in a super dry environment and under a lot of heat, you are going to get extreme curling. Keep them super cold and damp, and you’ll get extreme curling in the other direction.

Foil vs. Premium [ ]
In Magic, “foil” and “premium” used to be (almost) synonymous. Wizards of the Coast say “premium” because they want to use a consistent word for all their products and not all their premiums in every product are foil. [21] For example, Duel Masters had some promo cards printed on metal. [22] In actuality, foil is a subset of premium. [23] Back before Wizards of the Coast started making foil cards, the prerelease cards were still premium thanks to the gold-stamped date. [24] In fact, any special treatment, including unique layouts or stamps, is considered premium. [25] For example, a Game Day promo of Abrade is also premium. As such, it can be used with the Un-card Super Secret Tech, that care about premium cards.
With the introduction of Booster Fun in Throne of Eldraine the Premium range was expanded upon with showcase cards, extended-art and borderless planeswalkers. [26] All the Booster Fun frames are premium cards and they exist in foil and non-foil. [27] [28]

When you have a set like Modern Horizons 2, nostalgia plays a big role, and this set includes new ways of looking at the familiar. Where the new meets the nostalgic is where the Art team gets to have some fun in Modern Horizons 2 using card treatments.
What Is a Card Treatment?
Card treatments are exciting ways of presenting cards in Magic and make opening a pack even more fun. Mark Rosewater talked about the effort to develop cool ideas for card treatments, called Project Booster Fun, back when Throne of Eldraine was coming out.
Each set has amazing card treatments now, and they give select cards a special visual quality. You’re already familiar with a few of these, such as borderless mythic rare planeswalkers, as well as the showcase frames that embody the unique spirit of their sets.
Modern Horizons 2 really takes Booster Fun to the next level, showing off a range of card treatments that enhance the Magic experience. There are traditional foil cards, of course, and borderless cards, too. You’ve also had a peek at the new showcase sketch and retro frames you’ll find. These can turn up in all types of booster packs.
But there’s more. Exclusive to Collector Boosters, you’ll find extended-art cards—plus fetch lands with extended-art treatments—and dazzling foil-etched card treatments that include foil-etched treatments of retro frames that really pop.
There’s a lot happening in Modern Horizons 2, and as you’ll see, there’s also a lot of effort and truly talented people that made all this a reality.
Magic Card Treatments: A Group Effort
The behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating card treatments that appear in each set is significant. The team who tackled that work in Modern Horizons 2 was headed up by Creative Manager Tom Jenkot and Senior Creative Director Jess Lanzillo.
«Card treatments are a group effort with each new Magic set,» said Tom. The team included Senior Graphic Designer James Arnold, who headed up the sketch frame aesthetics; UX Designer Daniel Holt, who handled testing concepts, creating new mechanical frames, and proofing final assets; and Senior Art Director Cynthia Sheppard, who selected artists and provided vision that ensured the concept was executable. Principal Product Designer and Magic Hall of Famer Mike Turian was also involved in bringing Modern Horizons 2 together.
The effort extends beyond the core team. «Every treatment begins with tons of communications across teams,» said Tom. «Our group talks with game designers, worldbuilders, product architects, and other creative stakeholders to get a feel for what the set is aiming for.»
Game designers also pitch ideas, and in the early worldbuilding process, the set itself can spark inspiration. Throne of Eldraine inspired the storybook frame treatment, and Zendikar Rising featured a «postcard» style of art that matched the theme of visiting locations.
For Strixhaven, the Mystical Archive served as an inspiration and «brought an illuminated manuscript feel to its cards,» as Tom said.
«In the case of Modern Horizons 2, the sketch frame cards were decided early on, while the retro frame cards were added to the product later when we realized they might resonate strongly with the Modern Horizons audience.»
Picking the Right Card Treatments
«Players probably don’t see that there is a lot of iteration and testing done on the card treatments before going to final,» said Daniel Holt, the UX designer on Modern Horizons 2. «For every treatment that makes it into the packs, several are shelved for later use. Booster Fun treatments are tested on levels of excitement and receive a lot of input from stakeholders and surveys.»
Low-fidelity mockups of each treatment are created for testing to see what would most excite fans. New mechanical frames that can affect gameplay, like the [Kaldheim] snow frame, go through playtesting to see how players interact with them.
Sometimes testing reveals that the team’s favorite option won’t excite fans the way they had hoped, so it’s back to the drawing board.
The realities of the card content itself can also affect choices. «If card text content or length changes no longer fit the planned treatment,» said Daniel, «we have to make adjustments to accommodate those shifts.»
Game mechanics, too, can change or be cut altogether during development, suddenly making a card treatment choice irrelevant.
Modern Horizon 2 Card Treatments
For a design concept that encompasses the history of Magic, you can imagine there were a lot of potential ideas for card treatments in Modern Horizons 2. These were whittled down to a few that fit in well with the Modern Horizons 2 theme and let us show off Magic artwork that we love in new ways.
Traditional Foil and Foil-Etched Treatments
The traditional foil card treatment has been a part of Magic: The Gathering for many years. Though the foiling process has varied during that time, foil cards have remained a staple of pack-cracking fun for a while.
In late 2020, Commander Legends introduced players to the foil-etched card treatment with a new kind of visual wow factor. The foiling process is similar to traditional foiling with a few variations, and the imaging and typesetting processes take a little longer to complete.
For Modern Horizons 2, there are 153 foil-etched cards to be discovered in Collector Booster packs, including basic lands, new-to-Modern reprints, retro frame cards, and Modern Horizons cards with the retro frame treatment. The combination of traditional foil and foil-etched treatments with the new frames opens new dimensions to explore in visual quality, coolness, and collectability.

Borderless and Extended-Art Treatments
Borderless cards are a perpetual fan favorite—and why not? Magic alternate artwork is stunning, and there’s an electric charge you get when you open a pack and find this big, beautiful artwork spilling out of bounds on a card that makes your palms sweat with its potential.
Consider for a moment the versatile, the humble, Counterspell:
Who are we kidding? Humility is not in this card’s vocabulary!
«Borderless card art allows the art to be more immersive and front and center,» said Cynthia. «Artists have more room and larger dimensions to work with than normal, allowing them to do tricks they couldn’t typically do with the standard frame.»
Extended-art card treatments similarly defy the traditional frame limits of regular Magic cards, pushing out horizontally to grant players a glimpse at more of an artist’s work. Modern Horizons 2 features extended-art treatments on rares and mythic rares that don’t have another treatment version already.
Different card treatments allow the team to branch out into new styles and dip into the continually expanding pool of artists for talent. They can tap an artist who has shown their skill for a type of card subject, such as landscapes, characters, or abstract magic, for example. «Or, we can go with one of the stylized artists that can hit the thematic creative look we’re going for,» said Cynthia.
Showcase Retro Frame Treatments
Nostalgia is a prominent theme in Modern Horizons 2, and no card treatment hits that note better than the retro frame treatment. For this set, the team reached back to pluck elements that really convey that sense of history.
Retro artwork is from a different era, so bringing it forward for a modern set had its challenges.
«Magic frames have come a long way from the retro stylings,» said Daniel. «Trying to shove things back into that box can be troublesome.»
Traditional foil retro frame cards also presented an interesting twist when dealing with older cards. During the foiling process, there is what’s called a white under-print plate, or simply a WUP. Specific elements of the card are under-printed with different values of white ink to create the visual textures within the frame and illustration. In the early days of Magic, we didn’t have custom WUP treatments for artwork, so on traditional foil retro frame cards, the foil effects don’t show inside the art box itself. (Foil-etched treatment will be visible over the entire frame and art of the card for foil-etched retro frame cards.)

Players with long Magic memories will find another nostalgic nugget in these treatments, too. «We got to add some callbacks to the classic frame template,» said Daniel, «including a tombstone symbol in the upper left for cards that have effects while in the graveyard.»
There are 61 showcase retro frame cards spanning all rarities in Modern Horizons 2, including the aforementioned fetch lands. There is also a group of original Modern Horizons cards that get retro frame treatments, which you can only find in Collector Boosters.
Non-foil retro frame cards can be found in Draft and Set Boosters. Traditional foil versions have a chance to show up in any of the booster types, while the foil-etched versions will be exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Showcase Sketch Treatments
Art creation for Magic is an iterative process. Generally, an artist receives a brief on what a particular Magic card is about or how it might visually be represented. The artist then creates a sketch of their vision and shares it with the team. The collaboration continues until a final work is complete.
The early artistic work in the process can be fascinating, especially when compared to the final result, and it seemed a shame that players don’t get to experience this.
Enter the showcase sketch treatment.
There are 54 cards with showcase sketch treatments in Modern Horizons 2. «We wanted these to celebrate the abundance of variety and diverse ways our artists work,» said Cynthia Sheppard. «Through the course of working with an artist, art directors get really good at interpreting what the final is going to look like based on the sketch. But it’s something that’s usually invisible to players, and we thought it would be an awesome opportunity to pull back the curtain and show that diversity.»
«A cool thing we did for Modern Horizons 2,» said Mike Turian, «was we let the artists know that each of the cards could be chosen for the sketch treatment.» With these in hand, the team narrowed the choices down to find great examples that illustrate the progress from the sketch phase to the final product.
«We wanted to make sure that when we did sketch cards, we did them in a set where they could be collected along with their finished counterparts. Modern Horizons 2 gave us that opportunity.»
Certain sketch cards have another cool behind-the-scenes detail: actual text given to the artist as guidance on the action, mood, or intent of the card. For example, an intent could be, «The spell shows a creature being damaged by powerful rays of light,» or a mood might say simply, «A friendship that can outlast death.» These give an artist a place to start without being overly prescriptive or limiting to creativity.
Sketch card treatments aren’t just for players; they hold meaning for team members, too. «What made them special for me,» said James Arnold, «was that they would go on to house the art of Richard Kane Ferguson and Drew Tucker. Both of these legends are good friends and mentors of mine and have been absolutely critical in helping shape my journey as an artist. I look up to them and deeply admire their work. The fact that I could make something special to pay tribute to their creative process and have a direct collaborative effort within the game that brought us together in the first place.»
