There are three forms of this message
These messages can suggest a problem with the drivers of the sound device, or possibly that you are asking the device to do something it cannot do. For example you will see this error if you attempt to Record to more channels than your device supports, or if you try to overdub on a device that can either record or play back but not both.

For some users Windows 10 is now blocking Audacity from using the microphone, on the basis of privacy settings.
After upgrading to version 1803 of Windows 10 (April 2018), a small number of users have been reporting that the microphone is getting detected, but it does not pick up any sound.

A problem of no recording level in Audacity is occurring quite frequently on Mojave, Catalina and later, due to Apple changing the Privacy settings for recording devices (making it more conservative, «safer»). Note that, although macOS refers to this setting as Microphone, it applies to all recording devices, including external USB / Thunderbolt interfaces.

Check PCI card or external sound device settings and connections
If you use a high-end PCI sound card or external USB or FireWire interface, you must make the sample rate, bit-depth and number of input channels the same in all possible places. If you got error “Error opening sound device” while using Audacity to record sound, don’t worry. You can fix the error by following the simple instructions below.
There are six solutions for you to try to fix this error. You may not have to try them all. Just work your way down at the top of the list until you find the one that works for you.
Solution 1: Ensure the external sound device is plugged in (desktop only)
If you’re using a desktop computer, ensure the device you use to listen to the sound such as external speakers, is plugged in.
If you’ve plugged the external sound device into the computer, ensure they are recognized by your computer.
How to check: In the system tray, if you see a red x with circle icon the speaker icon, it indicates the external sound device (for example, your speakers or your microphone) is not connected to the computer. In this case, unplug the device then replug it. After that, if the issue is still there, refer the steps in Solution 2 to check if the device is disabled.
Solution 2: Ensure the external sound device is enabled
If the external speakers or microphone is disabled, error “Error open sound device. Try changing the audio host, recording device and the project sample rate” would occur. So when you get this error, check if the device is disabled. If it’s disabled, enable it manually.
Follow steps below to check if the speakers are disabled:
1) Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, and select Playback devices.
2) If you see the Speakers disabled, right-click on the item, then select Enable. If you see the Speakers enabled, skip this step.
If you’re using a laptop computer, you also need to check if the microphone device is disabled.
Follow these steps:
1) Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, and select Recording devices.
2) If you see the Microphone disabled, right-click on the item, then select Enable. If you see the Microphone enabled, skip this step.
Solution 3: Ensure audio device settings in Audacity are configured correctly
This error can be caused by incorrect audio device settings in Audacity. So check and ensure the audio device settings in Audacity are configured correctly.
Follow these steps:
1) Open Audacity.
2) Click Edit in the menu bar and select Preferences.
3) Click Devices.
3) Ensure the Host field set to Windows WASAPI.
After you set the Host to Windows WASAPI, you’ll see the values of Device field under Playback and the Device under Recording change automatically.
5) Click the OK button.
6) Check to see if you can record successfully.
Solution 4: Turn off Software Playthrough of input in Audacity
Software Playthrough should not be enabled when you record sound. If it’s enabled, error “Error opening sound device” will probably occur.

This issue usually occurs when there are no recording devices available. For example, if you click Edit, Preferences, and under Devices, there would be no options available to select in the Recording Device drop-down list.
The error may also occur when Audacity is configured to use a sample rate for recording that the sound card in your computer does not support. Audacity may also be trying to record more channels than the sound card can support.

That error message is pretty generic. It basically says that Audacity either doesn’t know how or can’t tell your sound card to start recording. There are any number of reasons for this to happen.
Really the best thing to do is tell us what you’re trying to record and we can help from there.

I’m getting the same error message(running Vista, Acer 3100 w/ AMD dual core 4400, recording from Minidisc plugged into mic in of Realtek sound card)—checked settings(sample rate,devices enabled) in preference menu, checked sound card settings, all as it should be, but error message persists. Audacity was working fine during my initial attempt, until it crashed, after which I downloaded the recovery utility, which Vista didn’t seem to like. The feeling was apparently mutual, as the utility «stored» the recovered files in a nonexistent folder. After 2 recovery attempts, I let Audacity delete the temp files from the prompt upon opening, and uninstalled the recovery utility. When I attempted to record again, hello pesky error message. So—what now?
OK, I’ll answer my own question—in my case, it was resolved by switching the «recording device» setting to aux, instead of using stereo mix (which I’d swear was the setting when it worked before, but what do I know?).
Now Audacity seems to have changed its mind and likes stereo mix again. No more trying to be Mr. Smart Guy for me.

I can’t tell you what’s going on with the Recovery Utility. All I know is it’s far from being perfect and doesn’t work for many people. I think it was designed to help handle one specific kind of crash, but people get and handful of others and the program can’t keep up with the differences.
I can tell you that the «Stereo Mix» option is recording your speaker output, so if you hear any Windows sounds while it’s playing they’ll get recorded too. You’ll also hear any noise on all the other inputs that are turned on, even if there’s nothing plugged in (this may be inaudible though). It’s best to use the input that you’ve plugged directly into (which might be «Aux», though I would expect it to be called «Mic In», but it depends one what your drivers decided to call it).
One final note, you seem to have plugged a Line level device into a Mic Input. This isn’t a very good idea. The Mic input is designed for signals that are (on average) 100-1000 times smaller than a Line Level signal. You might have a Mic/Line input that can switch itself between the two volume levels, but if you don’t, you’ll probably get much higher quality recordings if you use an external audio device with a Line level input like the Behringer UCA202 (
$35). Standard Mic inputs are also limited to mono signals, they can’t record true stereo (though you might get 2 channels out of it, but they’ll be identical). I can’t tell you how to figure out what you’ve got, but your computer manual should say somewhere.
