Первые шаги VMware: GSX Server и ESX Server

Этой небольшой статьей-заметкой мы хотели бы завершить серию публикаций, посвященных истории виртуализации в Enterprise-сегменте рынка. Сегодня поговорим о VMware, компании, которая на сегодняшний день является фактическим законодателем в мире виртуализации. Давайте посмотрим, как выглядели одни из самых ранних продуктов VMware: GSX и ESX.

VMware была основана в 1998 году. Её первым коммерчески успешным продуктом считается VMware Workstation, выпущенный в 1999 году и предназначенный для работы на клиентском «железе».

Для серверных рабочих нагрузок в следующие 2 года был с нуля разработан продукт VMware GSX Server. Его название — это сокращение от более длинного «рабочего» имени Ground Storm X. Первая коммерческая версия 1.0 датируется 2001-м годом. Устанавливалась она поверх Windows Server или SUSE Linux, что характеризует ее как гипервизор 2-го типа.

Усовершенствованная версия GSX Server 2.0 увидела свет через год, летом 2002-го. Под своим оригинальным именем продукт просуществовал вплоть до декабря 2005-го, когда была выпущена последняя коммерческая версия 3.2.1.

Гипервизор завоевал популярность благодаря широкому списку поддерживаемого оборудования (от сервера до обыкновенного десктопа) и простоте установки и первичной настройки. Кроме того в GSX наличествовали встроенные NAT и DHCP-сервер, что существенно облегчало процесс настройки сети.

Затем GSX Server был переименован в VMware Server и стал распространяться совершенно бесплатно. В списке поддерживаемых гостевых систем появились и 64-битные ОС, а гипервизор получил возможность выделять машинам несколько vCPU. VMware Server появилась 12 июля 2006-го и официально поддерживалась вплоть до 2011-го.

Сладкий плод виртуализации понравился инженерами VMware. Гипервизоры 2-го типа — это хорошо, но 1-й тип способен дать гораздо больше возможностей!

Параллельно с GSX Server шла разработка нового гипервизора типа 1. В отличие от предшественника, его уже можно было установить на «голое» серверное железо без ОС-посредника.

Продукт получил рабочее название VMware Scalable Server. В настоящее время он известен уже под именем ESXi. Ниже приводим скриншот, приблизительно датированный 1999-2000 годом.

Уже совсем скоро, к 2000-му, проект получил новое название: VMware Workgroup Server. А в марте 2001-го компания официально выпустила VMware ESX 1.0 Server. ESX — это аббревиатура от Elastic Sky X. Забавно, но придумали его вне стен VMware. Сотрудники компании прекрасно разбирались в компьютерах, но ничего не смыслили в рекламе и маркетинге. Специально нанятое агентство предложила лаконичный вариант Elastic Sky. Инженеры взбунтовались: как это, новый коммерческий продукт, в названии которого нет ни малейшей технарской изюминки?!

И добавили в конце загадочный X. Почему? Вероятно, «чтоб никто не догадался!». Да и звучит более круто. Забавно, как точно это имя попало в цель: вряд ли в далеком 2001-м кто-то придумывал его с оглядкой на облачные вычисления.

Впоследствии вокруг нового продукта сформировался целый отдел, самым известным сотрудником которого был Джон Аррасджид, один из авторов и ведущий архитектор vCloud Architecture Toolkit (vCAT).

VMware ESX Server стал первым на рынке гипервизором 1-го типа для Intel x86. В нем были впервые реализованы многие функции, ставшие едва ли не стандартом: живая миграция виртуальных машин, High Availability, автоматический балансировщик нагрузки, инструменты управление питанием и т.п.

В течение нескольких лет ESX и GSX были одновременно доступны широкой аудитории. GSX «целился» в более приземленную аудиторию: малый бизнес, небольшие государственные учреждения, в то время как ESX стал флагманским продуктом для Enterprise-сектора. Однако по-настоящему серьезно ESX начал использоваться лишь к 2006 году.

Среди прочего ESX имел сервисную консоль. Ее роль выполняла виртуальная машина на Linux, через которую можно было управлять хостом и другими ВМ. Для установки дополнительно программного обеспечения сторонних производителей (например, сервисов резервного копирования) предполагалось использовать программы-агенты.

Еще до того, как ESX начал серьезное распространение в бизнес-среде, началась разработка его преемника, уже без сервисной консоли. К сентябрю 2004-го внутри компании состоялась презентация первой полнофункциональной версии продукта под названием VMvisor (VMware Hypervisor). Через 3 года этот продукт появится на рынке под общеизвестным именем ESXi.

На выставке VMworld 2007 компания представила VMware ESXi версии 3.5. Прошлые версии программы существовали только в недрах VMware и не демонстрировались широкой публике.

ESXi занимает гораздо меньше места, чем ESX, и может быть установлен во флэш-память. Фактически, его уже можно рассматривать как часть сервера — на это намекает буква i в его названии. Она означает Integrated, интегрированный.

Вплоть до выхода vSphere 4.1 VMware предлагала клиентам два варианта: VMware ESX с Linux-консолью и ESXi с меню настройки сервера. Поддержка ESX официально завершилась с выпуском vSphere 5.

Программное обеспечение, как и гипервизор, несколько раз меняло названия. Например, VMware VMcenter настолько редко и давно использовалось, что по нему даже толком ничего не гуглится. Разумно предположить, что это одно из «внутренних» наименований продукта. Оно фигурирует, например, на этом скриншоте:

Весь дальнейший путь VMware хорошо известен всякому пользователю или системному администратору, который хотя бы раз сталкивался с виртуализацией. Пул решений компании велик и разнообразен, а перспективные разработки, такие как Tanzu, не так давно начали появляться вне тестовых стендов.

ESX is the most popular framework for creating economy-based roleplay servers on FiveM, with many official and community resources designed to utilise the tools provided here. For a taste of what’s available:

esx_society: Allows job resources to register a society, gaining employee management, society funds, and more

esx_billing: Allows members of some societies to send fines or bills to other players

esx_vehicleshop: Allow players to purchase vehicles from a dealership, or setup society support for a player-managed dealership

esx_ambulancejob: Adds a death and respawn system while allowing players to work as EMS to heal and revive others

Legacy provides some necessary bug-fixes and improvements to optimise the framework before reaching the end of official support by the development team.

Most resources designed for 1.2 will have no issues with Legacy, notable exceptions are those which modify spawning/loading behaviour. There are several minor feature updates which do not impact compatibility with old resources.

NOTE: The loadouts system in ESX has always been problematic, and fixing it would require a complete overhaul. Your best option is to use a resource that handles weapons as items.

For creating or updating resources refer to the updated boilerplate.

ESX was initially developed by Gizz back in 2017 for his friend as the were creating an FiveM server and there wasn’t any economy roleplaying frameworks available. The original code was written within a week or two and later open sourced, it has ever since been improved and parts been rewritten to further improve on it.

Status update

This year has been a successful year for ESX and we’ve been working hard to get the framework to be the best for FiveM. We are keep going to improve the framework and our offcial resources, here’s a quick list of our upcoming plan.

Make sure there’s no ‘boring’ jobs

Some ESX resources are known for their poorly developed resources, and the tiny amount of intraction. In the upcoming time some resources will be getting a full re write.

esx_drugs recently got a complete re-write which improved interaction with 2000%, and expect similar interaction with what’s coming next. There will no longer be any resources that let you sit inside a ugly marker doing stuff. For example lumberjacks will have to cut down trees (esx_jobs).

Develop new, fresh resources

There’s some new resource that we’ve been laying the ground for, including an spawn manager where you’ll be able to choose your wanted spawn point. If you’re eg and cop you’d be able to spawn in the police station aswell, and if you own a property you’d be able to spawn in it.

An gang system has also been started to be worked on. It will feature gang hideouts on the map where gangs can take over them and then be able to buy illegal items & weapons. Will also feature rebel outposts where you also will be able to buy illegal weapons, items and vehicles.

It’s hard to ignore the ESX hate from many in the FiveM community. It doesn’t take long til someone has to be insulted at, been talked shit about and more. Especially the FiveM forum moderators have shown an attitude on their own discord and in the forum which is a real suprise, and how they treat people.

The «ESX hate» is standard and an attitude the staff are ok with. What kind of staff are they? They are clearly not fit for moderating a forum.

One element had recently posted an announcement acknowledging this and said that they’re trying and improve the situation but we strongly doubt that the attitude will change, it has truly become an toxic place.

We’re not interested in posting in their forum no more, and will stay here on GitHub and our discord community, which you should join if you haven’t already.

Game breaking bugs & known exploits

We’ve been working hard on fixing exploits that allow people to get loads of money, and will keep working on every resource keeping them bug and exploit free. Many resources have recently recieved updates fixing different issues and bugs, so make sure you update them too!

New features

«Throwing» update

Throwing items has been revisited in ESX. There is no longer a drop delay, which has also fixed some vulnerabilities with it too. Weapons, currency and items now all have seperate strings in the locale files when dropped.

Weapon Components

ESX finally now supports weapon components in GTA. They are saved in the database and wont be lost no more. You can use xPlayer to give components to the player

The valid components for a weapon is found in the weapons config file.

THIS SERVER IS NOT BEING UPDATED ANYMORE!

It will work fine for some time now scriptwise, but you will probably have to take care about updating the server artifacts and Visual C++.

A server made with base resources from ESX and Essentialmode Framework. And also ESX_kashacters.

I will Not provide any more support for this. If you followed the steps given it should be working and you should have a Base server setup. This one is configured to be in English. If you want to learn how to edit stuff then you should move on to the FiveM forums. https://forum.fivem.net/

Im sitting in alot of Discords and forums where i constantly see people asking «stupid» questions about:

This made me think of a way to make people create their own server the easy way. I myself didnt have that much experience when i started with FiveM, ESX and Lua in general. The savior for me was that i already had some experience in C# and Javascript. So i could find my way through and learn something. But what i noticed when i started was that all the guides for setting up a server and database where pure shit.

That is why im making this Pre-setup server made by only using official ESX resources from https://github.com/ESX-Org

You will need to install these things to be able to follow the guide, if you are a person who knows what you are doing then do it your own way.

Follow the installation guide that is given by both programs.

First you start of with moving the FXServer_ESX folder to your C:\ harddrive. it is important that the path to the server is correct or it wont start. the path should look like this: C:\FXServer_ESX

Start up XAMPP and press start on MySQL and Apache in the Controlpanel.

Double click on the «ESXBase.sql» file provided in the download. When Heidi opens up you will see this window:

First press on «Ny» on the bottom, this is corresponding to the language you choosen. Mine is Swedish.

Then name the Session to whatever you want.

Press «Öppna» or «Open» in english.

When Heidi opens up you will see a Blue arrow on the top, press it and the sql file will execute and create your database.

Now if you press the update button or F5 on your keyboard you will see a new Database called essentialmode in the list to the left.

Good you can close up Heidi cause we dont need to touch it anymore.

Now we go into the FXServer_ESX folder and search for a file called «server.cfg» right click on it and press edit.

First you move down and find this line: sv_hostname «ESXBase server» Change it to what you want to name your server.

Then you move down to this line at the bottom: «# License key for your server (https://keymaster.fivem.net)» sv_licenseKey «changeme» Use the link provided and make your server key, this requires you to make a account on the FiveM forums. When you made your server key you paste it where the «changeme» is.

Save the server.cfg file and close it.

Search for the cmd file called: Start_Server.cmd Double klick on it and you should be asked a question if you want to clear your cache or not. At this moment you can press N & enter. Now your server should start up. Join it through localhost setting in FiveM or use your ip adress.

If you want other players to be able to join your server you will need to open up port 30120 in your firewall and/or router. If you want your fancy server to show up in the Serverlist on FiveM you will need to open up port 30110 in your firewall and/or router.
