How to Determine Your Fertility Window
Before we talk about how to calculate your fertility window, it might be helpful to briefly review the stages of your menstrual cycle, as hormonal changes that occur during the different phases set the stage for ovulation and provide clues as to when ovulation is coming.
As you may already know, in order for conception to take place, at least one healthy and vigorous sperm must be waiting in the fallopian tube at the moment ovulation occurs and must be able to fertilize the egg within 12-24 hours of the egg being released from the ovary.
Since sperm can only live for a maximum of 5 days in the female reproductive tract, only a small number of sperm will even survive the long journey through the female reproductive tract. Therefore, couples trying to conceive should plan to have intercourse a number of times in the days just prior to ovulation.
To do this means you must be able to predict when you will ovulate, a task that is sometimes more difficult than you might think. Fortunately, for those of us who need help, there are several reliable ways to predict when your most fertile days will occur during each cycle.
Timing of Your Fertility Window: Before and After Your Period
In the first several days of the menstrual cycle (called the follicular phase), certain hormones, specifically follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), begin the maturation process of follicles (the sacs that hold the egg) in the ovaries. In the second week of your cycle, FSH levels begin to decline and a single dominant follicle continues to develop.
This growing follicle produces increasing amounts of estrogen, which initiates the ovulatory phase. Estrogen plays a key role in the ovulatory process and helps to prepare the body for pregnancy. This hormone helps build the lining of the endometrium, facilitates the secretion of fertile-quality cervical mucus (which helps to protect and transport sperm through the reproductive tract) and triggers the production of the luteinizing hormone (LH).
By paying close attention to how your body responds to increased estrogen in the first couple weeks of your menstrual cycle, you can begin to predict ovulation. For example, many women know ovulation is just around the corner when they see an increase in production of fertile-quality cervical mucus.
Tools for predicting ovulation
Here is a brief introduction to some of the available tests and devices that can be used to help you pinpoint your fertility window.
Because the estrogen surge typically precedes the luteinizing hormone surge (the luteinizing hormone is the hormone detected by urine-based ovulation tests), ovulation microscopes can often provide more advanced notice of ovulation, giving trying to conceive women more time to appropriately plan their “baby dancing”.
Using measurements obtained from the oral and vaginal sensors, the OvaCue produces a numerical reading that reveals the relative trends in electrolyte levels. This allows the OvaCue to identify the hormonal changes that occur during the ovulatory process, thereby allowing it to predict and confirm ovulation. There are a few different electronic fertility monitors available, the OvaCue is manufactured by Fairhaven Health, LLC.

If you and your spouse are planning to get pregnant, then one thing that you need to be aware of is your fertile window. A lot of couples struggle to conceive simply because they are not aware of their best days to conceive. The human body is made in such a way that it has certain days each month when the body prepares itself for pregnancy. Knowing these days can pave the way to a long-awaited pregnancy for you and your spouse.
What Is a Fertile Window?
When a woman is ovulating, her ovaries release an egg into the Fallopian tube. The egg stays in the Fallopian tube for 24 hours before making its way to the uterus. In the absence of sperm, the egg, along with the uterine lining that was prepared for pregnancy, disintegrates and comes out in the form of a menstrual period. However, in the presence of sperm, the egg gets fertilized to become a zygote, which then attaches itself to the uterine wall. This zygote becomes an embryo, which then later evolves into a foetus.
A lot of people misunderstand how ovulation works. They assume that there’s only one day in the month that a woman can get pregnant, because the egg survives only for a day. However, here’s a fact – sperms can live in the uterus for over five to six days. This is why having intercourse during the five to seven days before ovulation increases the chances of getting pregnant.
How to Calculate Your Fertile Window
Keep track of your cycle for about five months. You need to know how many days are there in your cycle. You can even download a period app, as this will make the calculations for you. You can also download a fertile window calculator app.
The most common way to determine your fertile window is by choosing one of your shortest cycles. Let’s say it is 27 days. You then have to subtract 18 from it. The answer you have now is 9. Then choose your longest cycle. Let’s say it is 30 days. You need to subtract 11 from this. Here, then answer is 19. Your fertile window is most likely to be from the 9th to 19th day of your cycle.
Another way of measuring your cycle is by jotting down your basal body temperature, which is the body temperature first thing in the morning after you get out of bed. The average temperature ranges from 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit. During your fertile window, your body temperature rises by over four to eight-tenths of a degree. This is another indication that you have ovulated.
Yet another way to identify your fertile window is by keeping a tab on your cervical mucus. After menstruation, the discharge is dry. Shortly before ovulation, it gets sticky. During ovulation, the mucus is semi-transparent, wet, and stretchy.
How Does a Fertility Chart Help?
A fertility chart can help boost your chances of getting pregnant by keeping a tab on your fertility window and knowing when your body is best prepared for pregnancy. No one knows your body better than yourself, and tracking down all the changes in your body with a fertility chart will help you know and understand your fertility window better.
For couples who are trying to conceive, the fertility window is like a pregnancy calendar. When you try to get pregnant, every month counts. Don’t miss yet another month – the fertility window might be just what you need to finally have your baby.
Conception planning and your fertile window
Those who are trying to conceive should understand their fertile window and how to know when it may occur.
What’s a fertile window?
Your fertile window is the day that you ovulate and the five days leading up to that day. The last day of your fertile window, ovulation, is the phase of your cycle when one of your ovaries releases an egg into a fallopian tube. If you’re TTC, this is the part where your egg awaits the company of sperm for fertilization. Once released, an egg only has a lifespan of about 24 hours to be fertilized. If the egg is not fertilized, it disintegrates, triggering your next period.
Even though the egg is only viable for about 24 hours, sperm are able to survive in the female reproductive system for up to five days. This means that if sperm is present in these few days before ovulation, it could result in conception. However, the closer to ovulation that the sperm is there, the higher the likelihood of conception will be. So if you’re TTC with a male partner, this means intercourse close to ovulation is best for baby-making.
When is it?
Old rules of thumb will tell you that ovulation occurs about halfway through a cycle, or 14 days after you get your period. However, time of ovulation can differ greatly from person to person and even cycle to cycle, depending on the length and consistency of an individual’s cycle and any outside influences like stress or malnutrition. Because there are more factors at play here than just time, we need to look beyond just period data to understand when ovulation occurs.
How can Ovia identify yours?
In the past, people have relied on a number of different methods to predict ovulation, but Ovia Fertility can pinpoint it with simple data logging. Enter your fertility data – such as cervical fluid, basal body temperature, and physical symptoms – each cycle, and Ovia will analyze that data and make accurate predictions about your fertile window.

What is a fertile window?
If you’re trying to fall pregnant, the timing of when you and your partner have intercourse is critical.
Your fertile window refers to the most fertile days in your menstrual cycle which give you the highest chance of conceiving.
For our Ovulation Calculator to be the most accurate and useful, you’ll need to keep track of the dates of your recent menstrual periods.
Your cycle length is the number of days between the first day of bleeding of one period, and the first day of bleeding of the next. This can vary from 23 to 35 days, and 28 days is about average. If you have irregular menstrual cycles, calculating your ovulation date can be more difficult, but we suggest going by your shortest period date to ensure you don’t miss your ovulation date. Ovulation urine tests can give you some idea of your fertility window, or you might find further advice from your GP or fertility specialist useful.
To calculate your fertile window, you need to determine what day you ovulate. To do this, you need to know the length of your menstrual cycle (which tends to vary from 23 to 35 days).
The length of your menstrual cycle is the number of days from the first day of bleeding in your last period, to the first day of bleeding in your next. From this figure, subtract 14 days from the end of your current cycle to determine the approximate day you ovulate.
If you have irregular menstrual cycles, or your cycle length varies from month to month, it will be difficult to calculate your ovulation date. Ovulation urine tests or ovulation tracking may be useful, and you should consider seeking further advice from your GP or a Fertility Specialist.
If you are trying to fall pregnant, the timing of when you and your partner have intercourse is important. The most fertile time in your cycle are the days leading up to ovulation, just before the egg is released from the ovary when the cervical mucus allows sperm to pass through the cervix and into the uterus and fallopian tubes. Sperm has the ability to live for 2–3 days in the cervix, uterus and tubes awaiting arrival of the egg. The egg is able to be fertilised in the 24 hours after release from the ovary.
To optimise your chances of conceiving, it is therefore recommended you have unprotected intercourse every two to three days in the lead up to ovulation. If you wait until you have ovulated before you have intercourse, it is most likely that you will have missed the opportunity for conception that month
For a naturally conceived pregnancy to occur it requires normal egg production (ovulation) by the ovaries, normal healthy sperm both in structure (shape or morphology) and the ability to swim (motility), and normal fallopian tubes and uterus.
During intercourse the sperm will make their way through the woman’s cervix into the uterus and then along the fallopian tubes. This is where the sperm will encounter an egg that has been released from the female ovary. Conception starts at the moment of fertilisation when a sperm penetrates the outer shell of the egg and an embryo is subsequently formed.
Over the next four to six days the embryo moves down the fallopian tube to the uterus and implants in the lining of the uterus where it will hopefully continue to grow.
Most couples have spent years trying not to fall pregnant. So, when you decide to stop using contraception (pill control) and start trying for a baby, it helps to get a little advice on where to start.
There are three important ways you can improve your chances of falling pregnant naturally:
Ovulation cycle tracking can help you confidently understand your fertile window by tracking your hormone cycle and detecting the hormone surge associated with ovulation. Read more about ovulation cycle tracking.
If you are trying to conceive, we recommend you and your partner get checked by your GP to ensure you are in good physical health. This typically involves blood tests to help with a review of your general health and a check of your current medications. For women your doctor will likely make sure you are up-to-date on your pap smear tests, rubella and advise you to start taking folic acid.
For both the male and female it is time to commit to a healthy lifestyle:
It is recommended that you consider seeking professional advice after trying to conceive naturally without success for 12 months if you are under 35 years-old or after 6 months if you are over 35.
A fertility specialist can conduct some simple fertility tests to find out what’s happening, explore all your options and help you fall pregnant sooner.
