It would have worked if you have just waited a little, too, without reinstalling. 😉
If you see other people reporting the same problem at the same time with you, then it’s probably not related to your local installation, and reinstalling is not going to fix it.

I’ve actually tried this. My launcher has no «Log out Machine» button, anywhere. I only have one launcher and the options menu doesn’t have that in there. It’s too bad all the advice I can find is either old(people saying activate my key. they don’t give keys on steam anymore) or irrelevant like this. I appreciate it, I’m sure it worked for you but this is just one in a pile of solutions that aren’t an option on my second-class customer version of the game.

Step 1 : Search Elite Dangerous Horizons on store search press enter
Step 2: Click the Elite Dangerous game thumbnail on the results
Step 3: When your on the store page, scroll a bit lower where you can read «Game is already in the Library» you can see a «BLUE PLAY BUTTON» under it and it will reload back the game to Elite Dangerous Horizons.
My Theory is that the game Launcher was set back to the Basic Elite Dangerous game and not The Elite Dangerous Horizons Launcher version which is blue colored theme launcher as you notice. That might causes the bug of Steam and ED Launcher.

The launcher automatically changes when you authenticate your login. It is set to a base game orange theme by default, when the game copy isn’t yet authenticated. This is not a bug.
My Theory is that the game Launcher was set back to the Basic Elite Dangerous game and not The Elite Dangerous Horizons Launcher version which is blue colored theme launcher as you notice. That might causes the bug of Steam and ED Launcher.

Do you have your Commander’s name on top of that orange launcher? It looks like the launcher doesn’t see your login. Have you used «Steam Log In» button on the launcher when you logged in for the first time?
Have you tried to click on Steam Log In? It should link your account back to the launcher, and change your launcher to blue.

You can’t just buy this game on Steam and click play. You need a account at Frontier as well. They also send you a code to your email which will allow you to log into the game.
Also if you bought the game from a scam site then I have no sympathy for you. Either buy the game from Steam or Frontier Developments.
If every single one of you bought it from the site that shall not be named then honestly I have no sympathy if you got scammed.
The site that shall not be named isn’t an official key reseller and is notorious having very low standards when it comes to where they get there keys.
Responses like these make me just wanna get my Steam refund and not even bother trying to solve the issue.
You can’t just buy this game on Steam and click play. You need a account at Frontier as well. They also send you a code to your email which will allow you to log into the game.
That’s not how it worked for me. You only need to link your Steam account to your Frontier account, no codes or such required. Once you linked your accounts you then start the launcher and things should work. But the registration process is seriously flawed, after I had linked my account (which wasn’t easy!) I still couldn’t play at first. Only after 20 or so minutes did everything simply start to work automagically.
Also. definitely beware not to use the generated icon but start the game from the Steam library at first (so: access your library using the Steam client and use the launch option there). If you don’t then that too can interfere with the authentication process.

Ok. SO I solved it. I could not Log out since I wasn’t logged in. I recreated the account and clicked the connect to Steam or whatever it was called even though my account name from steam was displayed in the register form. This solved it.
