Pearson Esquire. Эсквайр (англ. Esquire, обыкновенно сокращенно Esq.) — почетный титул, происходящий от англо-норманнского слова escuier, франц. écuyer, лат. scutifer, т. е. «щитоносец». Первоначально титул этот носили в Англии все те, которые, не будучи пэрами или рыцарями, пользовались правом иметь свой герб, т. е. весь обширный класс английского дворянства — джентри. Лица низших классов могли получать этот титул только посредством королевских грамот. Титул передавался потомству. Теперь в Англии титул Э. дают: 1) все государственные должности, начиная от мирового судьи, 2) степень доктора и 3) звание барристера (поверенного при высших судах).
